Report on Women On Skates

Report by Jon Wong
April proved to be a month of good weather as 2 of our events went on successfully, the former being the Nightskate with our National Adventurer, Mr Khoo Swee Chiow and the latter being the Women-On-Skate event on the 26th.
We were very proud to have approximately 50 ladies who came from all walks of life and of all ages to support our event . On top of that, there were almost 20 SAVs/Instructors to cover the safety, and we formed a hefty crowd of around 80 skaters.
The participants started to show up at East Coast Park as early as 6pm. Each participant received gift vouchers and a complimentary event singlet and scarf. Light bracelets and bangles were given out too to add some glow.
At approximately 8pm, our sea of orange shirts and red singlets set off to paint the paths of East Coast Park. We cruised along the park until we reach the Safra Country Club, which was also the entrance to the Coastal Park Connector.
It was a great feeling to see so many skaters skating together and enjoying themselves, and more encouragingly, some of the skaters came from our very own Learn-To-Skate programme, and was doing their maiden voyage of urban skating.
The Park Connector proved to be a challenge for most of the skaters as they had to deal with branches, twigs, pebbles and other obstacles. There was a stretch of the connector which was dark as the lights were malfunctioned and we also had to face marathon runners coming towards our direction of travel.
But everyone dealt with the route very well, with no injuries or casualties. Everyone managed to complete the journey together and there was a sense of satisfaction in the air. Many had neither attempted such a long distance, nor skated with such a huge group of skaters before and they must be very touched and proud to complete the entire journey.
To top it all off, we managed to secure a drinks vendor to sell his drinks at a flat rate of $1.00! It was a great atmosphere all around the food center with food and drinks and to see skaters mingle around. New friendships were forged and everyone enjoyed themselves, before the complimentary bus brought them all back to East Coast Park.
This is not the end, but the beginning of more interesting skating events to come in the future.
