SNS October 2008 Report - Halloween Nightskate

Report by Jon Wong
Skateline Instructor

Skateline held its first ever Halloween Nightskate on the evening of the 25th of October, with the theme of monsters cos-play. Skaters were encouraged to dress up of make-up as Halloween characters, and registrants stands a chance to enter contests and win prizes.

There were prizes for 2 categories up for grabs: The best Halloween Skater and the Best Halloween Kid. There was also a special category for a group of young skaters who joined us for the first time, from the Singapore Management University (SMU), who are named 'SMUX' and a couple of them from National Technological University (NTU).

This time round, the turn-out for the Nightskate was really overwhelming, with more than 80 skaters supporting the event, the biggest number we've had for SNS this year. We gathered outside The Cathay theatre, with some of the skaters already drawing attention from passer-bys with their Halloween outfits and make-up. Skaters received mini pitch forks and skeleton gummies as door gifts.

I painted a skull on my face and bones on my arms, while some of the other characters includes a Mummy, Vampires, Witches, Reapers and some with hedious masks over their heads. It was really fun and interesting, to have a Halloween gathering, and even more so to do it on inline skates.

We promptly set off at about 8pm, and as we took the streets along Bras Basar Rd towards Boat Quay, we received mixed reactions from the pedestrians along the way. Some were terrified and ran away when they saw us, some shunned away with smiles and some simply admired our entourage and even stopped us to snap photos with us.

Skating down Boat Quay and Clarke Quay was fun, yet challenging too. We had to be careful to deal with the people around, especially food servers and diners, but they don't seem to mind our presence at all. Many of them were staring at us with smiles and laughter, and perhaps wished they were part of us, i guess.

The final highlight was when we skated back to SMU campus, and all of us enjoyed skating through the tunnel that links the campus together. Some skaters were very excited as it was their first time in the tunnel. Everyone appreciated the cooling breeze from the air-conditioning after the hot affair on the surface. It didn't take us long before we reached the end of the tunnel, and came up to the campus opposite The Cathay.

Everyone stayed to witness the winners from the respective categories receiving their prizes, and many photo taking sessions followed next. Nobody wanted to waste the opportunity to capture the moments
